I'm going to beecome a Beekeeper!
When I tell people that they often ask 'why?'
My answer is because I love honey and nature! Yes, I go through about 15 kg of honey in 3-4 months!!
Then why wait till now to start?
Simple, an easy to harvest honey device was invented, called Flow Hive.
When I saw Flow Hive on Indiegogo back in February this year I instantly knew it was the answer to my dream of beekeeping without the hassle, equipment and time of manually extracting honey that had held me back from starting.
So I've ordered two Complete Flow Hives, due to arrive this December, awesome Christmas present!
To get ready I've read more than a dozen books, watched heaps of YouTube videos, talked to experienced Beekeepers, bought gear, borrowed bee boxes, even volunteered to clean up a mates hives, joined the local Beekeepers society and attended meetings, registered with the local authorities, and will do a 1 day beginners beekeeping course. Look out for more about this in another post.
I'm planning to be ready by the Adelaide Spring 2015 to collect a couple of swarms to get started, and will transfer the frames into the Flow Hives when they arrive.
The next posts will be about the books I've read, the gear I've got, the experience of cleaning someone else's hives, the Beekeepers society, registration of hives, the course, and looking for suitable hive sites, and of course getting the first swarm!
Until next time, bee careful and bee happy!
