Beekeeping Courses - SA Adelaide Hills
South Australian Beginner Beekeeping Course
SORRY - I'm no longer running these courses, I just don't have enough spare time.
Our 12 hour SA Beginner Beekeeping Course is designed to your own individual needs and to equip you with the essentials of beginner beekeeping.
The course is run over 3 sessions of 4 hours each. We space the sessions out several weeks apart so that you have time to apply the skills, knowledge and techniques learnt in each session. The three sessions build on each other.
Session one: introduction to beekeeping, including: law, a reality check, safety, equipment, tools, honey tasting and demo hive tours (Langstroth and Flow Hive). It's a good combination of theory and hands on practice.
Session two: life in a bee hive, hive managment, bee health and diseases and hands practice on in live hives.
Session three: hive inspections, honey extraction, swarm collection, and hive maintainence. We will head out to your hive/s, if suitable, for personal one-on-one mentoring at your hives!
Got a new hive or parts and not sure how to put them together or build it?
Bring it to the sessions and get it built by an expert in hive building!
This is your course, so you can request topics that you want to learn about as well! let me know what you want ot know in advance and I will tailor the course for you!
Course costs: $180/person for 12 hours. Couples: $320/couple ($160/person).
Location: Session 1 and 2 at Flagstaff Hill, Session 3 at your hive or Flagstaff Hill.

Pre-Course: things you can do to prepare.
Pre-reading:
If you want to get reading this is the most straight forward book to get started on:
If you're based in South Australia:
If you are considering keeping honeybees, we recommend reading Recreational Beekeeping - A guide to beekeeping in South Australia (PDF 3.1 MB). This FREE guide provides the information you will need to get started, including the legislation and responsibilities that must be followed.
https://pir.sa.gov.au/biosecurity/animal_health/animal_species/bees
For Australian beekeeping:
"Bee Agskills", it’s $25 and you can purchase it online here:
https://www.tocal.nsw.edu.au/publications/bees
Love to read?
"Australian Beekeeping Guide" - more great useful info, download for free here:
https://www.agrifutures.com.au/product/australian-beekeeping-guide/
Equipment Essentials:
- Beekeeping suit or veil,
- Protective Gloves
- Hive Tool ‘J’ Style
- Bee Brush
- Smoker
With the suit/veil and gloves it pays to buy good quality, because if the suit or gloves break or come apart while you are playing with the bees it’s too late to wish you paid a little more for quality gear!
For your hive you will also need:
- Wax Foundation Full Depth (at least 10 sheets to start your brood box)
- Stainless Steel Frame Wire (enough for 10 frames, buy the smaller spool)
- Frame Wire Crimper
Click here to watch how to quickly, simply and cheaply:
- put wire in your frames,
- how to tension the wire,
- how to put the wax foundation in the frames,
- how to embded the wax onto the wire.
At this stage you won’t need any thing else.
Hive Works at Lonsdale, South Australia is fair priced and with good quality equipment.
Contact Ben the owner, check their website for opening times/dates, tell Ben that Mick Shaw from Hilltop Hives sent you!

Australian Honey Bee Industry Biosecurity Code of Practice
The Australian Honey Bee Industry Biosecurity Code of Practice (the Code) has been developed in consultation with beekeepers and governments to provide a framework for Australian beekeepers to use best-practice biosecurity measures. Some sections of the Code will very soon be mandatory under state law. Some parts of the Code apply to all beekeepers; others apply only to beekeepers with 50 or more hives. Download and read the code from here:

Biosecurity Online Training
As part of the introduction of the Code to South Australia, beekeepers will need to show that they have completed an approved Beekeeping Biosecurity training course. You can complete one now, online here:

Feel free to call me to discuss any of these things.

Anand Varma - Photographer, a photographer for National Geographic, captured the first 21 days in the life of bees, as they develop from eggs to larvae to fully fledged insects. The incredible footage was presented at a TED Talk on 11 May to raise awareness of the dwindling bee population, which is under threat.
